Industrial Methanation Catalysts for COx Removal and Synthetic Natural Gas Production
Looking for a methanation catalyst supplier for your ammonia plant, hydrogen production unit or synthetic natural gas project?
We supply nickel-based methanation catalysts for two major industrial applications: converting residual carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) in hydrogen-rich process gas, and converting CO/CO₂-rich feedstocks into methane for synthetic natural gas (SNG) production.
Our product range includes catalysts for final gas purification in ammonia and hydrogen production, as well as high-temperature methanation of coke oven gas, coal-derived gas and suitable industrial gas streams.
Whether you are planning a new methanation unit, replacing an existing catalyst or evaluating a process upgrade, explore our products and request technical guidance based on your feed gas composition and operating requirements.

Methanation is a catalytic hydrogenation process that converts carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide into methane and water in the presence of hydrogen.
The main reactions are:
CO + 3H₂ → CH₄ + H₂O
CO₂ + 4H₂ → CH₄ + 2H₂O
Both reactions are exothermic, meaning that heat is released during conversion. Catalyst selection and reactor temperature control are therefore important considerations.
Industrial methanation catalysts serve two distinct process requirements.
COx Removal in Hydrogen-Rich Gas
In ammonia and selected hydrogen processing systems, methanation converts small amounts of residual CO and CO₂ into methane and water. This reduces carbon oxide concentrations before downstream processing.
Synthetic Natural Gas Production
In SNG projects, methanation converts suitable CO, CO₂ and hydrogen mixtures into methane-rich gas. The resulting gas undergoes the required downstream treatment before delivery or further processing into CNG or LNG.
These applications require different catalyst operating conditions and reactor designs.
Our nickel-based methanation catalysts cover two main applications: residual CO and CO₂ removal from hydrogen-rich process gas, and methane synthesis for synthetic natural gas (SNG) production. The range supports new methanation units, catalyst replacement and existing plant upgrades, with catalyst selection based on feed gas composition, operating conditions and process requirements.

Methanation is commonly used as a final carbon oxide conversion stage in conventional ammonia production processes.
After CO shift conversion and bulk CO₂ removal, small amounts of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide may remain in the hydrogen-rich synthesis gas.
Methanation catalysts convert these residual carbon oxides into methane and water, helping prepare the gas for downstream ammonia synthesis.
The suitability of a catalyst depends on the inlet COx concentration, hydrogen content, operating temperature, pressure and impurity levels.

Methanation may be used in selected hydrogen processing systems where residual carbon oxide conversion is required.
The process converts CO and CO₂ into methane and water while consuming hydrogen. It should therefore be selected only when the resulting gas composition is appropriate for downstream use.
For hydrogen production processes requiring reforming, shift conversion or other purification methods, explore our hydrogen production catalyst range.
Coke oven gas can serve as a feedstock for industrial methane synthesis when its composition and pretreatment conditions are suitable.
Methanation converts appropriate carbon oxide and hydrogen mixtures into methane-rich gas.
Catalyst selection should consider the CO/CO₂ ratio, hydrogen availability, sulfur concentration, reactor temperature profile and required product gas composition.
Our high-temperature methanation catalyst is intended for selected coke oven gas-to-SNG applications.
In coal-based SNG production, coal-derived synthesis gas is conditioned before entering methanation stages.
The feed gas composition must be matched to the required methanation reactions, while sulfur and other contaminants need to be controlled to protect sensitive catalysts.
High-temperature methanation catalysts can be evaluated for suitable gas compositions and reactor designs.
For upstream processing requirements, explore our syngas catalyst products.
Suitable industrial process gases containing CO, CO₂ and hydrogen may be considered for methane production.
The technical feasibility depends on gas composition, availability of hydrogen, impurity concentrations, energy balance and downstream gas quality requirements.
Methanation catalysts may be part of an integrated gas utilization project when these conditions are met.
