SCST Ammonia Synthesis Catalyst Series and Integrated Technology
The SCST ammonia synthesis catalyst series and integrated technology represent a suite of catalyst products and process solutions developed by Sichuan Shutai Chemical Technology Co., Ltd. Drawing on over 60 years of technical heritage and continuous innovation, the company designed these solutions for ammonia production processes utilizing feedstocks such as natural gas and coal. The technology covers key stages of the entire ammonia synthesis process—including desulfurization and purification, primary reforming, secondary reforming, carbon monoxide shift conversion (high-temperature and low-temperature shift), and methanation—and is primarily applied in plants producing ammonia from natural gas, methane-rich gas, or coal.
The SCST-231 low-temperature shift catalyst, independently developed by the company, has captured approximately 70% of the domestic market share in the large-scale nitrogen fertilizer industry, successfully replacing well-known foreign brands previously used in numerous large ammonia synthesis plants. Track Record: At a 540,000-ton/year natural gas-based ammonia plant (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Inner Mongolia Erdos Group)—which features a fully imported unit, a low-temperature shift converter with a low height-to-diameter ratio (1:1), and a space velocity of approximately 6,000 h⁻¹—the company's catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance. While the previously used Clariant (Panjin) product typically had a service life of about two years, the SCST low-temperature shift catalyst operated at full load for over five years. Post-operation results showed an outlet CO concentration of ≤0.22% (design value ≤0.36%), a hotspot temperature below 225°C, and a pressure drop of ≤43 kPa; the client was highly satisfied. Following a replacement in February 2024, the inlet concentration was 2.92% and the full-load outlet concentration was ≤0.15%, with overall performance exceeding historical levels.
